Another week, another 50ish bags of concrete. Or something.

Good day, everyone!

The above photo was taken on Monday afternoon, once the concrete was poured and everyone had left. It was a busy day:

  • We had our first inspection of the drainage under the slab, which passed without any issues.
  • More gravel was put down.
  • Holes were drilled around the sides of the opening for rebar that sticks out into the opening (and thus the new concrete) so it’s all bound together.
  • Foam board insulation was put down. followed by sheet plastic as a vapour barrier.
  • Wire mesh went in and was wired to rebar.
  • Finally, they mixed up 45(ish) bags of concrete and poured them in to fill the hole in the slab.

While that made for a full day, they knocked off an hour early on Monday because the concrete had to cure before they could get moving again.

And get moving they have. The rest of the week has been a whirlwind of a different kind. There’s all kinds of stuff happening, but it’s not the big, shared labour now. Instead, there are several people down there, each working on something different: back framing to add support for sheetrock, starting the interior wiring, framing in the ceiling of the bathroom, and so on.

I have a bunch of photos, but without context they are useless. They are documentation for the future if needed.

In any case, life this week has been different because the nature of the work is shifting. Anne and I go downstairs three or four times a day to check on things and answer questions. And every time we’re down there, questions need to be answered.

In other news, there isn’t much.

The dog is still fine as far as we can tell. She goes to the vet in another week for yet another round of blood work. If we’re lucky, the prednisone stops then.

And the latest issue of the monthly email goes out tomorrow. I’ve spent a lot of time this week finalizing that.

In any case, I hope you are all doing well and that your concrete pours go smoothly and quickly!

Update: We just passed the first electrical inspection. That means that we are approved to convert the 100 amp service from the pole to a new 200 amp service. Those who were here months ago might recall we found wires that had melted together sometime in the past, and that started the whole process. This new service from the pole will be much better. I’ll try to have photos of that stuff next week. I keep forgetting to take pictures of it, and it’s raining right now.
