Art School: Semester 4, Week 11
Well, here we are again. Just the two of us. Staring back at the remains of the week.
I hope you had a good week. Mine wasn’t bad. It seems the most recent cold is almost gone, and there is now a light at the end of the tunnel that is the semester. And no, it’s not an oncoming train.
Tinkerbelle continues to do her thing, which is good.
All in all, I don’t have too much to complain about.
Wait, who am I kidding? I can find a zillion things to complain about it I try, but I won’t. Not for you. Not now.
So let’s review how the week went, shall we?
Professional Practice
We hung the show. Not a huge deal for me, and almost the last thing to do for this class. There was no comment from the instructor on my painting, so who knows what she is thinking. The only thing that I found problematic about the hanging of the show was that whoever hung my painting had dirty hands. There are fingerprints all along one side of the canvas now, and I need to clean them off soon.
The things remaining in this class for me:
- turn in a self assessment about hanging the show
- give a 13 minute talk (yes, really) about my art practice (this coming Tuesday)
- attend the show opening (also this coming Tuesday)
- attend everyone else’s artist talks (which continue for another class after I give my presentation)
That’s it. Done.
Design
I am just about done here. The instructions for the lamp are written. I need to review them at least one more time before printing them out, though. This coming week we have a work day in class. I will work on the parts for the exhibit that we will setup the following week. (That assumes the laser cutter is back in operation. The lens that focuses the laser beam cracked last week, and the replacement hasn’t arrived yet. Serious issue.)
So this class is basically done. Review and correct the instructions, print them, then be useful. I can do that.
Aboriginal Carving
I am close to done here as well. My “final” project is awaiting some paint. I have plans to do that today. Actually, I did it. Here is the end result:
Now that I have that done — though it still needs a title — I can work on an additional project of my own design. How far that goes (and how well) remain to be seen, but I am basically done with all the required projects in here already. Amusingly, this class has been extended a week, I think, so I have an extra week to work on my supplemental project(s). That’s cool.
Sculpture
Here there is still some work to do. The beast now has a title/name — Leo — and is waiting for paint. The current plan is to paint the base today, and then get going on painting the body in the coming days. Once I have that done, I can assess whether or not he’s really done and ready for crit. He’s close, but there might be some treatments for the base that are needed.

That’s by my friend Jessica, and she did a really nice job with it. I keep on saying how good it is to have a group that I am going through these classes with, and I mean it. When you are surrounded by people doing work like this, it pushes you hard. You have to put serious effort into things just to keep up.
Every time I stop and think “This is crazy, going back to school at my age! What am I doing?” I remember just how much fun I am having watching — and learning from — people like Jessica. Everyone should be so lucky as to be surrounded by fun people who are all doing their best. Perhaps that is cheesy and tacky, but it is definitely true.
