Cruzer in the Sun

Not much to report this week. Some weeks are just like that. But Cruzer found a sunbeam this morning, and that was nice.

From your perspective, it was a boring week. I was busy, but the big excitements were getting a haircut and buying a new paintbrush.

There was more progress on the closet doors in Anne’s office. Nothing to show yet. The last coat of paint just went on two doors. The new paintbrush seems to be faster than the previous one. I switched from a 1" angled brush to a 1.5". Both are very soft — which seems important for semigloss paint — but the new one holds more paint and pretty much covers two slats at a time, rather than just one.

I also worked on closing up the back of the vanity in the tiny guest bathroom. One part is now enclosed, but I have no photos yet. The wood to cover the other side just got painted. It can’t be installed until tomorrow at the earliest.

In addition, I worked on some trim issues with the door to my studio. This has been a struggle, since the door frame itself appears to have been improperly manufactured. On the hinge side, the door stop (the vertical piece of wood that hides the gap between the door and the jamb) is out of place. At the top and bottom it is too close to the door by a substantial amount. I made multiple attempts to fix this with a chisel & sandpaper, trying to get it all back in line, but eventually I gave up on that technique.

Instead, I moved the hinges out a bit by gluing a toothpick in between the back edge of the recessed pocket for the hinge and the hinge itself. Once that was dry I put the hinges back in — resetting the mounting holes in the process — and filled the remaining gaps with caulk. Then, once that was dry, I removed the hinges again (gently, so as not to disturb the caulk) and painted it all to match the trim.

This seems to have resolved the interference between the door and the stop, which means the paint won’t be rubbed off the edge of the door anymore.

I know, I know. None of this is exciting. I did mention that up top. But it’s been all house work except when I’ve been working on the community website. Don’t get your hopes up there either, though. The big additions to the website this week were

• A page about garbage collection. This is “interesting” because collection days change, and we have bears.
• A news post about some local road work.

Tomorrow I head into the Langara shop to keep working on the public art project frame, so maybe that will turn into something to share next week.
