I Survived!
Hello once again from somewhere in the wilds of Canada, where the truckers gather for stupid reasons, and the bears are starting to think about coming out of hibernation so they can ransack garbage cans. Maybe they can eat the truckers.
As the subject suggests, I survived the second round of shingles vaccine. I suspected it would hit me hard, but as of last week’s post it had only made my arm sore. A week later (and wiser?) I continue to be a vaccine wimp. A few hours after putting that post up I got clobbered: fever, chills, shivers, body aches, low energy, everything you could possibly get. It was nasty, and I spent the bulk of the weekend feeling miserable.
But that’s all in the past. I’m left with just the normal bodily issues and discomforts. You know, the stuff you get from genetics and bad habits like not exercising enough. Those things. Boring.
What can I share this week? Well…
I managed to replace two more fluorescent light fixtures in the garage with LED versions that don’t hum all the time. Those old fixtures were really annoying, and needed to die. With those gone we have only two other locations with fluorescent lights left in the house. One is in the laundry room, but replacing it is tricky. The lousy home brew wiring job means it will take some effort to make it look nice, and that room is far down on the priority list.
The other is in the kitchen, where the under cabinet lights are narrow fluorescent tubes. So far, they don’t hum, so I am ignoring them. The kitchen needs a complete remodel at some point, and that’s when they’ll get replaced.
I also bought supplies to add more railing to the staircase. There’s a section at the top without railing, and it’s bothered me since we moved in. It’s finally hit time to do something about it. I’ll keep after that, and share pictures once I get going on it.
And… hmmm. It’s not exciting, but I’ve been painting the closet doors that go in my office, continuing to get rid of the ugly grey the previous owners painted every door in the place. It’s a slow process, as you might recall from the last time I shared photos and discussed it, but there is progress.
Beyond that I’ve been a bit of a slug. More than a bit, to be honest. I reread Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency, by Douglas Adams, and I definitely enjoyed it. So much so that I am now rereading The Long Dark Tea-Time of the Soul as well. Adams could turn a phrase like few other authors. Highly recommended reading if you’re interested in modern fantasy. (I suppose I don’t actually know that “modern fantasy” is the right way to classify these books, but it’s the best I can come up with. They take place now — or when they were written, in the 1980s — and in the real world, but there are fantastical elements involved, including time travel, various gods, and so on.)
Finally, I continue to play with the infrared camera. I promised a few readers I would share more of those images, and I will be doing that. And in fact, this is the only picture of any kind I have for you this week:
It was taken in a park not too far from our home. The colours feel very different from the subject matter. I find that fascinating and attractive.
I’ve got more photos to process and ideas for images to create. I’ll share them here, but you might eventually find more of them on Instagram, where it seems artists share their work these days. I despise social media, but such is life. You can find me here: https://www.instagram.com/jrpstonecarver/. No login should be needed. There’s nothing new out there yet and I don’t post all that often, but when I do it’s related to art or projects. New photos go up there first as a rule, because it’s easy to post them as they get done. Anything included in these weekly posts on Medium comes, well, once a week. And I might not share everything here to keep things shorter. You get the idea.
Anyway, if you’re already an Instagram user, you could follow @jrpstonecaver there. And If you’re not a user, that’s just fine. I see no reason to give Mark Zuckerberg a single penny more than he already has. With luck I will rework my personal website one of these centuries and that will be my desired online presence.
Is there anything more to share? Not that comes to mind, at least not for this week.
All the best!
