OK… I have now picked a work of art by Marcel Duchamp for this collage project. And it’s an odd one: Tu m’.

See it here: https://artgallery.yale.edu/collections/objects/50128

and an interesting article about it here: https://lareviewofbooks.org/article/duchamps-long-shadow-the-secret-meaning-of-tu-m/#!

It’s Duchamp’s last painting, other than Etant Donnes, which wasn’t made public until after he died. It is apparently his last painting on canvas. It makes references to many of his past works, and contains a few objects sticking out of the canvas: a bottle brush, a bolt, and some safety pins (that close a rip).

The general theory is that Tu m’ is shortened from:

“tu m’emmerdes” (you annoy me) or “tu m’ennuies” (you bore me)

Article about Tu m’ by Marcel Duchamp

Both indicate that he was bored with painting. He gave it up and did other things for many years, in fact, so that may well be correct.

In any case, take a look. It’s an interesting painting, and Duchamp was quite a character. I’m not at all sure I agree with the level of influence given to him, but I don’t run this particular zoo.

Sculptor/Artist. Former programmer. Former volunteer firefighter. Former fencer. Weirdest resume on the planet, I suspect.
