Temporary Bachelorhood

Hi all. This is going to be a short post. Anne is out of town for a while, and I am doing nothing but working on the house. The closet doors for the guest bedroom are painted and ready to hang, but I have no photo yet.

I did take advantage of the fact that Anne is away to paint the ceiling in her office. Of that I can provide at least one photo:

It may not look like much, but it is a huge improvement.

Paint has been an interesting issue. We were using Benjamin Moore since they have a store near our home, but they are having serious supply problems thanks to Covid. At the moment both of the local stores have none of the eggshell base needed for the colour we are using, and it will be at least a week — and quite possibly longer — before they have it back in stock. So I have switched to Home Depot as a paint supplier, and assuming the paint I picked out is of reasonable quality we may not go back. They can mix exactly the same colour we were using from the name and ID that Benjamin Moore uses, so it seems nice and simple.

The next project while Anne is out is to paint the tiny downstairs bathroom, just to get it into shape.

I also have to start figuring out more about the bifold door situation. There is one more small one downstairs that can be painted and rehung, assuming I can get hardware to fix a problem with the track. But the other two closet doors downstairs are trickier. Both need to be converted to French doors. One should be easy once I figure out the hinges. The other, however, has a damaged door, and the conversion to a French door is not obvious. More on that one when I get to it.

The only other news this week is that I have ordered a new dishwasher and over-the-range microwave oven. The former is not the one I wanted, but the old one is broken (such that it makes gobs of noise when it runs) and it must be replaced. I wanted a Bosch, but those are out of stock until at least the new year, and probably until spring according to my sources. Instead I have ordered a model from LG. It should be OK, at least until we redo the kitchen in a few years, and perhaps for longer. The microwave will replace the one currently over the range. It’s a low profile model and it will give us a lot more room to work while cooking. There may be some wall repair needed during installation, but I’ll get it done. Photos whenever that happens as well.

There are a few other odds and ends I might get done. Only time will tell. Prepping for winter is on the list.

That’s it for this week. Really, there is nothing more to say. Next week will be similar, as Anne will still be out of town. Keep safe and sane out there!
