Things Are Picking Up

Hey there!

First, just to get it out of the way, I continue to be fine. Two weeks after the surgery my healing continues without incident or complication. That’s all good, and life is returning to normal. And I promise I’ve been following instructions. Really. No heavy lifting. But it’s been excruciatingly boring, and I hate that with a passion.

But there is news. The rest of the windows have arrived. All of them!

The last delivery even included the screen for the sliding glass door, so everything is here. Despite my incisions, I flipped through the newly arrived windows and confirmed their measurements match what we ordered, so it is likely everything about them is correct.

Even better, just before I started writing this, I got a text from the contractor. He plans to be here on Tuesday or Wednesday of next week to get started on the garage window. We’ll use that one to work out the desired trim treatment. This is big news. Unless something changes, next week we’ll be making real progress on this crazy job.

I hope to have photos in the next post.

Other than twiddling my thumbs, I spent a bit of time last week working on my comparison of the Canadian and American medical systems. I suspect it’s about 80% done, perhaps more. At this point I need to edit it again, and get at least one or two others to go through it and find my gaffes before I publish it. I hope to have it up by the time next week’s post comes out. Assuming that happens, I’ll share a link to it then.

My annual eye exam happened last week as well, and I was pleased to learn that my eyes are not significantly worse than they were before. No change in prescription. But — and there is always a “but”, isn’t there — my eye doctor can now see the early signs of cataracts. At my age this is no surprise, and there is nothing to be done at this point other than wearing sunglasses whenever out in the sun. Treatment will be needed in the decades ahead, but that’s the way the cookie crumbles.

When doing nothing else, I’ve been rereading the Takeshi Kovacs books by Richard Morgan: Altered Carbon, Broken Angels, and Woken Furies. It’s been a long time since I first read them, and I needed something to do. These are very (VERY!) dark, distant future science fiction. The main character is pretty much awful for a lot of reasons, so if you are thinking about reading these, beware of that. These are not for the faint of heart, but they have kept my interest as I sit around waiting for my body to heal. Apparently there’s a Netflix adaptation of at least the first book or two, but I know nothing about it. Honestly, it’s hard to imagine a video adaptation managing to be faithful to the source material. That would be… challenging.

In other news, there is no other news. Well, not from me at least. I’d call a certain set of hearings news, despite what a certain TV “news” network wants its viewers to believe. I trust my American readers are paying attention to that. And if you’re a Canadian reader there’s lots of information there to help Canada avoid taking the same dreadful path.

At the moment I need to get my ladders out and get up on the roof to check how my drainage protector thingy has been working with all the rain we’ve had. It seems fine, but I am paranoid, and it’s not raining for a few nanoseconds, so I need to hop to it.

Keep safe out there!
